Jan Gašparovič’s installation is inspired by the anechoic room model used in scientific research. In the busy city centre, however, it stands for the equivalent of a modern hermit rather than laboratory conditions; not completely isolated from the surrounding world, it nevertheless helps to sort and filter information. If the noise that cannot be escaped in today’s world is taken as a metaphor for information pollution and the cause of our distraction, superficiality or loss of identity, then Gašparovič’s soundproof pocket is a place that exposes our perceptions. It is a place that reduces not only reverberation, but also the current information ballast to which we are exposed on a daily basis.
